Robert H. Carey, 87 of Oxford passed away on April 25, 2011 at Binghamton General Hospital. He was born on October 3, 1923 in Windsor a son of the late Seward and Mary Edna (Hayes) Carey. On October 26, 1947 he married Margaret Brigham, who survives.
Besides his wife, Margaret, he is survived by his children, Joan and Hank Scudder of Norwich, Dennis and Tina Carey of Oxford, and Leslie and Brian Donley of Somerset, WI; his grandchildren, Karri and Michael Beckwith of McDonough, Robert and Kathleen Scudder of Pryor, OK, Katherine Carey of Greene, Jonathan and Jodi Carey of Windsor, Christan and Kevin Munn, Jessica Donley, and Bethany Donley all of Wisconsin and Ryan and Erica Harvey of Buzzard's Bay, MA; his great grandchildren, Allison, Bradley, Kristin, Lindsey and Kayla Beckwith, Corbin Scudder, Julianna Carey, Parker and Ryan Harvey, Corbin Munn, and James Donley. Many nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by his brothers, Kenneth Carey and Gordon Carey; his sisters, Glennes Carey, Marion Davis, Wilma Youngs and Marjorie Stiles and great granddaughter Hope Donley.
Bob especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a US Army veteran of World War II serving in the 385th Regiment of the 76th Division at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded twice in Germany later in the war, for which he received a Purple Heart. He was a life member of Fort Hill Post #376, American Legion in Oxford. He was a long time member of the Oxford Rotary Club and received the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was a member of the Oxford Fire Department for 55 years and served on the Oxford Emergency Squad for many years. He enjoyed coffee at the Oxford Men's Coffee Club for many years. He was an avid golfer, hunter and gardener. He was a long time member of the United Church of Oxford and sang in the choir for many years. He was a farmer in Tyner for many years before owning Oxford Farm Machinery. In later years he repurchased some of his former farm, where he enjoyed gardening, hunting and cutting wood.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 1:00 PM from the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford with the Rev. Allen Lang, pastor of his church officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery with full military honors accorded by member of Fort Hill Post # 376, American Legion.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford on Friday, April 29, 2011 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
