RICHARD D. BUCKLIN
Richard "Dick or Bucky" Bucklin, 74, of Oxford, passed away on Thursday August 3, 2017 at UHS Wilson Medical Center. He was born on June 16, 1943, in Binghamton, NY.
Dick grew up in Oxford and played baseball, football, basketball and ran track in high school. After graduation from Oxford Academy and Central School, he enlisted in the Army. He proudly served for four years, stationed primarily in Norfolk, VA and his time included assignment as a Captain of a transport boat on the Intracoastal waterway. After the Army, he graduated from SUNY Binghamton with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. Richard's work career began at the Norwich Pharmacy and he later became a licensed Nursing Home Administrator. He served as the Assistant Nursing Home Administrator at the NY State Veterans Home and the Nursing Home Administrator at the Norwich Hospital. He completed his career as the Nursing Home Administrator at Kendal of Ithaca. A lifetime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Oxford, Dick was also a member of the Oxford American Legion and previously served on the Board of Directors for the non-profit organization Camp Care. Bucky was an avid golfer and could often be found at Bluestone or Sundown golf courses, including his much loved "Geezer Golf" group. He was a friend to all, always ready with a helping hand and who will be remembered for his love of family, golf, the Dodgers and for playing a mean game of Pitch.
Dick was predeceased by his parents Jane Bucklin Cleaver and Donald Bucklin. He was also predeceased by the grandparents who raised him, Ella and Frank Bucklin. Richard is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary, of Oxford; his children, Kristin (Brad) Etzel, of Millersville, MD; James /J.R. (Christa) Bucklin, of Frederick, MD; and his beloved grandchildren Josh, Allison and Lucia; and his siblings, Pat (Larry) Lawson, of Norwich and James (Edie) Cleaver of Killeen, TX and sister-in-law Denise (Neil) Neary of Clarks Summit, PA. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and many good friends who are like family.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, August 7st, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Oxford. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 10:00 am until the time of service. Immediately following the funeral, there will be a gathering of family and friends at the Oxford American Legion. He will be laid to rest at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Oxford at 11:00 am on Tuesday August 8th.
