Maureen Joan Carter

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Maureen J. Carter, who left this world peacefully on May 5, 2025, at the age of 88. Born in Liverpool, England on October 5, 1936, Maureen brought kindness, humor, and an unwavering compassion to everyone she met.

In 1962, Maureen bravely crossed the Atlantic to New Jersey through a nanny program, and by 1964, she made the United States her permanent home. Though she left England behind, she carried its warmth and resilience in her heart and shared it generously throughout her life.

Maureen had a boundless love for all living creatures. Whether it was the family dog curled at her feet, or a spider gently escorted outside rather than harmed, her home was a place of comfort and safety—for animals and humans alike. Her deep empathy translated into a remarkable calling: for over 25 years, Maureen was a devoted foster mother. More than 175 children passed through her door, each one cared for, protected, and nourished—often with the help of her legendary cooking.

Maureen is survived by her loving sister Sheila Zur (Carter) of Oxford, NY, her brother Terry Carter and his wife Anne of Liverpool, England, her cherished niece Nicole Mirabile (Zur), Nicole's husband Frank, and their son Frank Jr. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews who adored her.

She was preceded in death by her dear brothers Charlie and Michael Carter, her sisters Jean Boyle and Freda Dykstra, and her nieces Barbara Campbell and Cathy Boyle. Her memory is also honored by the lives of her late nephew George Dykstra, nephew Vincent O’Rourke of New Jersey, and her loving parents, Agnes and Charles Carter of Liverpool.

Maureen’s legacy is one of unconditional love, tireless caregiving, and unwavering gentleness. She gave selflessly, laughed easily, and never stopped believing in the goodness of others. All who knew her—whether for a lifetime or a brief stay in her welcoming home—were touched by her incredible heart.

She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
