Mary (Estelow) Kiernan Sherburne - Mary E. Kiernan, 88, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2022. She was born on June 12, 1933, in Oxford, NY, the daughter of Jared VanWagenan and Charlotte (Sherwood) Estelow. Mary was pre-deceased by sister Phyllis (Estelow) Taylor and brothers Paul and Richard Estelow and her infant brothers, Jimmy and Billy.
Mary graduated in 1950 from Oxford Academy Central School, subsequently earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Oneonta State College. Mary worked at Victory Markets in the 1950s, where she met and married Charles Broniszewski in 1957, who passed away in 1971. Mary is survived by her daughters, Charlotte (Broniszewski) Brokaw, Catherine (Broniszewski) DeCuyke, son in-law Bruce Bump, and her beautiful granddaughters, MaryBeth DeCuyke and Joelle Bump. She is also survived by her loving step- daughter Carolyn Staudt, grandchildren Steve (Becky) and Peter (Tracey) Franchell, sister in-law Judy Estelow, and several nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. She was predeceased by her grandson Joey Franchell.
Mary married the remarkable John Kiernan in 1974, which is when she moved and became a life-long resident of Sherburne. Mary is also survived by her step- daughters Sandy (Tim) Fowlston and Meg Kiernan, and grandchildren Clint Fowlston, Jack Fowlston, Kate Haynes, Meg Fowlston and Molly Myers.
Mary's passion always centered around family, community, and the wellbeing of others. She held numerous leadership positions including President of Chenango County Democratic Committee, first woman town council person in Sherburne, and was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Fort Hill Post #376, American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a long- time member of the United Church of Christ in Sherburne. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services will be held at the Sherburne United Church of Christ, at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
