Ludwig W. Knapp, 94 of Smithville NY, passed away peacefully August 6, 2025, at the NYS Oxford Veterans Home.
Ludwig was born on September 1, 1930, in Dormagen, Germany he was the oldest child of the late Karl Knapp & Gertrud Paefgan.
Ludwig had an apprenticeship as an electrician and worked for the Bayer Plant in Germany. At the age of 24 in 1954 he came to the United State through Ellis Island, NY. He found employment for a while prior to joining the US Army.
He met his wife, Doris at a few army dances before they were married in 1956 and were stationed in TX for a while. They enjoyed 51 years together. They came back to NJ after TX and purchased their first home and Ludwig became an electrician for Proctor & Gamble in Staten Island, NY where he worked for 30 years.
Ludwig served in his community in many different capacities – Church Trustee, Boy Scout Leader and Habitat for Humanity. He had his own electrical business on the side and installed alarms as well – always keeping busy. Family camping trips, canoeing, backpacking up the Appalachian Mountain were always enjoyable activities for him.
Ludwig is survived by his daughter, Karen Cammarata and her husband John. Five grandsons, one step-granddaughter and her husband along with two step great granddaughters.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Chenango County ASPCA, The Oxford American Legion, or to the Chenango County Habitat for Humanity.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Behe Funeral Home Inc. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Thursday August 14, 2025, from 4:00PM-6:30PM. Military Honors will take place at 4:00PM. Friends and family may share memories and condolences by visiting www.behefuneralhom.com.
