John Jamieson Bancroft, Sr. (1941 – 2026) OXFORD, NY – John Jamieson Bancroft, Sr., 84, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2026, at the New York State Veterans’ Home in Oxford, NY. A beloved educator, decorated veteran, and devoted family man, John’s life was defined by his warmth, his dedication to his community, and an adventurous spirit. Early Life and Education: Born on December 27, 1941, in Manhattan, NY, John was the son of George Anthony Bancroft and Madeline Beatrice Jamieson Bancroft. He spent his early years in Jackson Heights, later moving to East Orange, New Jersey, where he worked alongside his father at their family Pharmacy. His youth was anchored by summers on Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts, where he developed a lifelong passion for the sea and served as a deckhand aboard Cornelius Wood’s racing yacht Star Sight. A 1960 graduate of Clifford J. Scott High School, John earned his degree in Biology from Gettysburg College in 1964. Before beginning his career, he spent time exploring Europe and North Africa, a testament to his enduring love for discovery. Military Service John served his country with distinction as a paratrooper in the United States Army. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, he deployed to Vietnam in November 1967 with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. As a platoon commander leading combat patrols from Pleiku and An Khe, he demonstrated exceptional leadership and bravery. He returned home in 1968 as a First Lieutenant and was awarded the Bronze Star for his honorable service. Professional and Community Life: In 1970, John and his wife, Christina, settled in Oxford to raise their family. John dedicated over 30 years to the Oxford school system as a fifth-grade teacher, shaping the lives of generations of students with his kindness and enthusiasm. Beyond the classroom, John was a pillar of the Oxford community. He served as a Justice of the Peace, worked with Camp Pharsalia, and played a vital role in the revitalization of downtown Oxford, NY through the restoration of historic buildings. In a final gesture of civic devotion, his family donated the Clark Baldwin Tower Memorial Park along the Chenango River. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Behe Funeral Home Inc.
