Joann Portuese

Joann Elizabeth (O’Keefe) Portuese, age 66, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025. Joann was born on November 5, 1958, in Queens, NY, to Joseph and Grace (Taibe) O’Keefe. She acquired her distinctive accent while growing up on Long Island before moving upstate with her family to Sherburne, NY, in 1973. Joann met her husband, Frank, while out with friends enjoying live music. They married and, in 1982, settled into the log cabin home she loved in Oxford, NY. Their daughter, Jillian, was born a few years later, and together they built a happy, meaningful life. Joann was a proud mother and was thrilled to become a grandmother in 2022. She poured her heart into her grandson, Miles, who absolutely adored her. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Joann is survived by her husband, Frank Portuese; her daughter, Jillian (Portuese) Nebesar, and son-in-law, Simon Nebesar; and her cherished grandson, Miles Nebesar. She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters: Ellen Franklin, Kathleen Green, and Jennifer Tomsic; along with her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved parents and brother, Joseph O’Keefe, Jr. Joann had a dedicated career of nearly 38 years working at the phone company, where she was known and loved for her lighthearted sense of humor and genuine friendship. She left a lasting impression on colleagues across the country. Joann was known for her deep love of family and friends, her nurturing spirit, and her generous heart. She was an avid gardener, adored animals and children, and found joy in motorcycle rides with her husband– always stopping at their favorite ice cream and farm stands. She especially loved time spent with close friends. Joann was always full of surprises, never took life too seriously, and had a natural gift for bringing laughter and light wherever she went. Joann’s warmth, joyful spirit, and open heart will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Her determination, authenticity, and memorable expressions will live on in the memories of all who knew and loved her.
