Jean Gott McDowell, 97 of Norwich passed away May 5, 2020 at Waterville Residential Health Care Center, Waterville, NY. She was born on January 27, 1923 in Avon, NY the third child of the late Oscar Howard and Mable (Clark) Gott. Her older siblings, John W. Gott and Virginia (Gina) Gott Gilbert predeceased her. She married her husband of 55 years, Donald Smith McDowell, October 8, 1955 in Central Presbyterian Church in Avon, NY.
Don passed away in 2010.
Jean is survived by her 3 boys David McDowell (Amy) of Sodus Point, NY, Bill McDowell of Ewing, NJ, and Andy McDowell (Camille) of Winston Salem, NC. She is also survived by her 4 grandchildren Andy Litzinger (Nichole Sixt), Jennifer McDowell (Nick Majors), Andrew (Peter Bult) McDowell, Cate McDowell and her 2 great grandchildren Jaelyne and Brady Majors.
Jean graduated as valedictorian from Avon High school in June of 1940 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilson College in 1944. Upon graduation she went to work in New York City for Morgan Guaranty Trust for 8 years before marrying Don and moving to his hometown of Norwich. Jean became involved in her community and was a long-time member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich, NY where she taught Sunday School and served as a Lector for the Church. Jean served as Den Mother for the local Cub Scouts and on the Board for the Chenango Valley Home. She was also on the board of the Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Jean enjoyed playing bridge, her book and garden clubs, and was an avid golfer. In retirement she and Don enjoyed traveling, and more golf.
The family would like to thank the ladies who helped her to remain in her home for the last four and a half years. They welcomed her into their own families and for that gift the family will be forever grateful.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Behe Funeral Home Inc. 21 Main Street, Oxford, NY 13830. Funeral services will be held later due to Covid19.
