Clifford "Chuck" Ross, 87 of Oxford passed away December 31, 2013 at the Norwich Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Norwich, NY. He was born on May 30, 1926 in Oxford a son of the late Allen and Laura (Fuller) Ross. On June 30, 1945 in Oxford he married Marie Cady, who passed away on December 19, 2003.
He is survived by his children, Gregory and JoAnn Ross of Oxford and Joan and Willard Bradley of Oxford; his grandchildren, Jason and Heather Bradley, Chad Bradley, Cara Bradley and Corey Endress, and Andy and Nicole Ross; and his great grandchildren, Grace, Jackson, Adyn, Nathan and Degan. He is also survived by his brothers in law and sisters in law, William Harvey, Alice Ross, Grace Ross, Donna Ross, Jane Ross, Amy Ross, Doris Potter and Lora and Derwin Jones. Many nieces, nephews and friends also survive. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Erika Bradley, grandson Travis Ross, and his brothers and sisters, Albert (Bud) Ross, Gerald (Lardo) Ross, Bernice (Happy) Baker, Mabel Harvey, Clifton (Jack) Ross, Lynn (Pinky) Ross, and Donald (Pop) Ross.
Chuck was a graduate of Oxford Academy and Central School. He worked for Borden's at the milk plant in Oxford before starting a 43 year career with C&U Telephone, which became Contel, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Oxford Hook & Ladder Company and helped build the original ladder truck. He served as Assistant Chief of the Oxford Fire Department for many years and served as Chief for 17 years, including helping design the Oxford Fire Station. He was Chief when the Fire Department began the bingo games. He was a 65 year member of Oxford Lodge #175 F&AM, and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member and frequent usher of the United Church of Oxford. He enjoyed spending time at Bald Mountain Colony in Old Forge, NY.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the United Church of Oxford, 25 Main St., Oxford with the Rev. Allen C. Lang officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford on Friday from 4-7 PM. Members of the Oxford Fire Department will conduct a memorial service at 6 PM and members of Oxford Lodge will conduct a service at 7 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Fire Department, PO Box 570, Oxford, the United Church of Oxford PO Box 566, Oxford or the Taste and See Soup Kitchen, PO Box 72, Oxford, NY 13830.
