Charles K. Race, 72 of Oxford passed away peacefully at his home on November 9, 2013. He was born on January 1, 1941 in Norwich a son of the late C. Kenneth and Florence (Simonelli) Race. On August 24, 1973 he married N. Dawn Cleveland, who survives.
Besides his wife, Dawn, he is survived by his daughter and son in law, Andrea and Joel Douglass and their daughter Vera of Groveland, MA; his sister Sandra Hawley of Little River, SC; his brother and sister in law, William and Beverly Race of Little River, SC. Several nephews and a niece also survive.
Charlie was a graduate of Oxford Academy and Central School and the Respiratory Therapist Program at SUNY Upstate, Syracuse. He served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. He was a former Trustee of the Village of Oxford and served the Village as Justice for over 20 years. He was a member of the Chenango County Magistrates Association. He was a long time member, past president and secretary of the Oxford Rotary Club, where he also enjoyed being an announcer at the Clyde Cole Wrestling Tournament. He was a member of the Oxford Fire Department, serving in the Fire Police and calling their bingo games. He operated Chenango Medical Home Care in Oxford for many years. He was a member of Fort Hill Post # 376, American Legion in Oxford. He was an avid bowler. He loved his cars and motorcycles as well as a good cup of coffee with his friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Oxford United Methodist Church, with Rev. Diane Diluzio officiating. Burial with be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford, with full military honors by members of Fort Hill Post, #376, American Legion.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St, Oxford, NY on Thursday from 4-7 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford United Methodist Church.
